Ruben Amorim has finally bowed to the inevitable and dropped Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana.
His latest two blunders against Lyon leaving the Man U boss with no choice. A bit of a shambles really, as Amorim should have done something long ago.
BBC Sport revealing that Andre Onana isn’t even part of the Manchester United squad today.
Ahead of their vital second leg against Lyon on Thursday in the Europa League, the Man U boss now forced to throw in Altay Bayindir to make his Premier League debut at St James’ Park.
In his two seasons at Old Trafford, Altay Bayindir has sat on the bench 59 times in Premier League matches but never got onto the pitch.
The Turkish keeper has made a handful of cup appearances for Man U but has looked far from comfortable, maybe pointing to why Ander Onana has stayed first choice for so long despite so many errors.
Altay Bayindir has conceded twice in cup matches against both Newport and Leicester since he arrived at Man U, whilst he was involved in a desperate goalkeeping contest against Spurs in December. He and Fraser Forster were shocking, the game ending 4-3 to the home side with the goalkeepers responsible for most of the goals. Altay Bayindir allowing a corner to go directly into the net, whilst also directly responsible for at least one of the other three goals that Man U conceded that night.
I think fair to say that we will see United looking to put as much pressure as possible on the Premier League debutant, with a high press in open play and then on set-pieces, looking to make life uncomfortable for Bayindir.
‘Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been left out of Sunday’s Premier League game at Newcastle.
Onana was at fault for both Lyon goals in his side’s 2-2 draw in the Europa League on Thursday – a day after he had been called “one of the worst goalkeepers” in United’s history by former Red Devils player Nemanja Matic.
Sources confirmed Onana has been omitted from Ruben Amorim’s squad for the game at St James’ Park to allow the Cameroon international to “rest and disconnect”.
It is expected he will be in contention to face Lyon in the return leg of the quarter-final tie at Old Trafford on Thursday and has been assured the change is not regarded as permanent.
Turkey’s Altay Bayindir is expected to deputise for Onana at Newcastle in what would be only his sixth appearance of the season and his first Premier League game.
