SAN JUAN DE TIBÁS, Costa Rica – Deportivo Saprissa won 1-nil against CSD Municipal in the 2024 Concacaf Central American Cup on Thursday at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San Juan de Tibás, Costa Rica.
With the win, Saprissa secured its spot in the quarterfinals by finishing first in Group D. The Purple team will make a second consecutive appearance in the knockout stage.
Luis Díaz had an early look for the hosts in the 4’ following a swift counterattack down the right flank, but his attempt inside the box was above the crossbar.
Saprissa goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado was essential in defending a corner kick attempt in the 5’ with an acrobatic save.
José Martínez had the most promising opportunity for Municipal in the first half with a one-on-one chance in the 34’, but Alvarado once again denied the visitors.
Ariel Rodríguez scored the lone goal in the match in the 41’, with a finish to the near post inside the box following collaboration with Javon East.
Eduardo Rotondi came close to equalizing in the 71’, but Alvarado stopped his shot inside the box.
Alvarado finished the night with four saves and collected his second clean sheet in the 2024 edition.
CSD Municipal bowed out of its debut campaign in the tournament. The Guatemalan side finished third place in Group D with four points.
