Football League World looks at two nightmare scenarios Sheffield United could face during the transfer window
Sheffield United are in with a serious shout of winning the Championship title just one season on from enduring a tough Premier League campaign which saw them finish bottom of the top-flight table.
The Blades have picked up several impressive results this term, such as a 1-0 victory over fellow automatic promotion hopefuls Sunderland back in November, as well as a 1-0 triumph over bitter cross-city rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
There was cause for yet more optimism at Bramall Lane in December, when American-based consortium COH Sports, led by businessmen Steve Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, completed their takeover of the club just days ahead of the January transfer window.
Furthermore, Chris Wilder's men recovered from a Festive blip, which included defeats to Burnley and Sunderland, as well as a draw with West Bromwich Albion, by defeating play-off contenders Watford 2-1 at Vicarage Road.
Amid the Blades' automatic promotion push, the Bramall Lane faithful will be excited about the prospect of their club bringing in reinforcements during the current transfer window.
However, while Wilder's side are performing so well in the Championship, some of their best players may have caught the eye of potential suitors in the January market.
Football League World looks at two nightmare scenarios the Blades could face during the transfer window:
The Blades signed midfield ace Gus Hamer ahead of last season's Premier League campaign, and the Dutchman performed well in the top-flight despite his side's 20th-place finish, notching 10 goal contributions.
The former Coventry City man has once again been a real threat for Wilder's men in the final third this term, despite usually being deployed out wide amid the presence of talented playmaker Callum O'Hare.
Last summer, the 27-year-old was the subject of a £13m bid from promotion rivals Leeds United, but the Blades were reluctant to sell their man to a fellow second tier title contender.
Meanwhile, Alan Nixon revealed last summer that Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers were also targeting a swoop for Hamer, following United's relegation to the Championship.
Hamer's contract with the Blades lasts until 2027, meaning that Wilder and co will be in no rush to cash in on their man, but the midfielder himself could be tempted by the prospect of a top-flight return if Premier League interest in his services resurfaces this month.
Another Blades star who impressed in the top tier last season, despite the woeful campaign the South Yorkshire outfit endured, was centre-back Anel Ahmedhodzic.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina international was also a key component for the United team, who earned promotion from the Championship to the Premier League following an impressive 2022/23 campaign.
Ahmedhodzic has once again established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the second tier this term, and is a major contributing factor as to why Wilder boasts one of the stingiest defences in the division.
Football Insider revealed that, along with Blades teammate Hamer, Wolves had also set their sights on the 25-year-old, who made a decent account of himself in the Premier League.
While Ahmedhodzic could be keen to add another promotion to his increasingly impressive CV, he would be unlikely to turn down top-flight interest in his services if it comes knocking again this month.
Furthermore, his contract at Bramall Lane expires in 18 months' time, so the Blades could be more willing to cash in on the defender than Hamer.
