FLW looks at Wednesday's top earners amid developments concerning unpaid wages at Hillsborough

Despite progressing under Danny Rohl on the pitch, controversy has once again returned to Sheffield Wednesday under the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri.

Chansiri is now into the tenth year of his ownership of the South Yorkshire side, although what promised to be an exciting journey at the start of his tenure in the Hillsborough boardroom couldn't have panned out differently, with Wednesdayites constantly voicing their frustrations regarding how the club has been run in recent times.

A recent club statement revealed that the Owls players hadn't been paid their salaries for the month of March due to a "temporary issue" that had "occurred as a result of significant sums of money owed to the chairman’s businesses which has in turn impacted on the club’s immediate cashflow."

After a backlog of controversies which supporters believe the 56-year-old is responsible for, this latest issue comes just months after the club was placed under a temporary restriction embargo in October due to delayed payments to HMRC.

On the pitch, Wednesday are looking to achieve a play-off spot in the Championship for the first time in eight years. But, following the aforementioned concerning developments, FLW looks at whom the club's six-highest earners currently are, according to estimated figures from Capology.

£20,000 per week

Dominic Iorfa has made over 180 appearances for Wednesday since joining the club back in January 2019 for an undisclosed fee.

The versatile defender has made over 20 appearances under Rohl this season after signing a contract extension at the end of the last campaign, as the club pulled off one of the second tier's most remarkable 'Great Escape' acts after being promoted from League One two years ago.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers man is among a cluster of five players who are earning an estimated weekly salary of £20,000 per week in S6, with Capology also estimating that his aforementioned extension concludes at the end of next season.

5 Nathaniel Chalobah

Nathaniel Chalobah's well-travelled career brought him to Hillsborough last summer following his release from West Bromwich Albion, with it being estimated that the 29-year-old is also on a £20,000 per week wage.

However, the former Watford and Fulham man hasn't made as much of an impact as he would've liked in the Steel City, arriving at the club with an injury in pre-season, before sustaining another muscle issue on debut against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup.

Wednesday's midfield has been a key strength this season, meaning Chalobah has largely been restricted to substitute cameos upon his return from the sidelines. But, with one year left on his contract, he will hope to change that regardless of any further changes at the club in the off-season.

Canadian striker Ike Ugbo was one of the main reasons behind Wednesday's escape from relegation during the second half of last season, scoring seven times in South Yorkshire on loan from FC Troyes after spending the first period of the campaign with Cardiff City.

However, after the Owls forked out a £2.5m and £20,000 per week salary for the nine-time international, Ugbo has, so far, failed to justify the hefty investment with a limited number of starts and a distinct lack of goals in comparison to Michael Smith and Josh Windass.

Ugbo may feel slightly concerned by the latest developments concerning Mr Chansiri, with the former Chelsea man penning a contract which could keep him at Hillsborough until 2028.

Yan Valery is no stranger to Rohl, having worked under the German whilst he was an understudy to Ralph Hasenhuttl at Southampton.

It was reported by the Sheffield Star - contrary to reports in France - that Wednesday had spent just £400,000 on the 26-year-old's services after he featured 68 times for Angers, with his final season with the club ending in promotion back to Ligue 1.

The Tunisian international has featured as the club's first-choice right-back throughout the season, and could remain at the club until he turns 29, at the end of 2027/28.

£20,000 per week

Rohl utilised his pre-established connections from St Mary's to strike a short-term deal with Scottish midfielder Stuart Armstrong in January, less than a year after the 33-year-old achieved promotion with the Saints.

Armstrong is the last player of the six to earn a weekly wage of £20,000 per week, which is a £45,000 decrease on his final salary on the South Coast, where he was one of the top earners during Russell Martin's only full season at the club.

The man who joined from Vancouver Whitecaps has made a limited number of appearances in Blue and White so far with the end of the season now in sight.

£24,000 per week

Barry Bannan has been a constant presence throughout Chansiri's time as chairman of the club, initially signing in 2015 after being released by Crystal Palace, and enjoying two fine seasons under Carlos Carvalhal as Wednesday reached the 2016 play-off final and 2017 semi-finals, losing to Hull City and Huddersfield Town respectively.

Throughout his time at Hillsborough, the Owls captain has made over 440 appearances for the club in the second tier and League One, scoring plenty of spectacular goals and oozing class in the centre of the park in a nigh-on 10-year period.

The former Aston Villa man signed a one-year extension with Wednesday last summer after survival was secured, earning a £24,000 per week wage - the highest at the club.
