Sarina Wiegman has today named her Lionesses squad for upcoming games against Portugal and Spain, and the main shock is that Chloe Kelly has been omitted.

The Dutch manager’s reasoning for Kelly missing out was a lack of game time. “She hasn’t played enough in my opinion. She moved clubs now, but last autumn she hardly played.

“As I said, she has built some credit, but over that time she has played less minutes. (Now at) Arsenal, get some minutes in, start playing and showing what you’re about and then we can revisit that again.”

Kelly has been replaced by Nikita Harris, amidst a difficult situation this season for her which ended in a move to Arsenal.

Wiegman said Kelly still has a chance for the Euros in the summer: “We had a good conversation yesterday and she understands. She’s not out for the Euros.

“When she gets back and she’s in full training, of course. Hopefully she’ll get the minutes as soon as she can show again and then as I said we’ll revisit it. And there’s huge competition going on in the team.”

Kelly will be hoping her time at Arsenal can get her career back on track, and Wiegman said she hopes the forward can show her best level at her new club: “Well I think it’s the same as what we all hope, that she shows good performances and gets some minutes, and gets her level back.”

Aside from missing out on the England squad, Kelly released a statement at the end of her time at Manchester City, which the England manager was asked to comment on: “I think she was hurt, she was worried about her mental health, that’s what her statement was.

“I don’t have the full context but I’m just glad now that she had a move which she mentioned was really good for her and hopefully she can, as she said, get a smile on her face again and play football and show who she is as a footballer.”

Wiegman also praised Ella Toone for how she has dealt with injury and returned to playing her best football: “I think what we all can see is that she’s enjoying football. I really enjoy seeing her having fun playing football because that helps and then getting good performances in too. But I think that goes hand in hand.”
