Don Goodman has given his advice for Middlesbrough in the upcoming January transfer window
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has claimed that Middlesbrough must strengthen at the back in January.
Michael Carrick’s side are currently in the mix for a play-off place in the Championship this season.
Boro finished eighth in the table in the previous campaign, so will be looking to improve on that this year, with their sights firmly set on a return to the Premier League.
The upcoming January transfer window offers Middlesbrough a chance to consolidate their play-off credentials by bringing in improvements to the first team squad.
Goodman has suggested that improvements need to be made in defence if Middlesbrough are going to sign anybody this winter.
He believes the attack is firing on all cylinders, highlighting their strong goal record, but has claimed they need to be preventing so many from going in at the other end.
“I noticed a change of goalkeeper at the weekend, with Sol Brynn coming in for Seny Dieng, who has been responsible for soft goals and whose stats don't make good reading,” said Goodman, via CoinPoker.
“You can't solely blame the goalkeeper but the defensive area is where they need to strengthen.
“Only Leeds and Norwich have scored more goals but they need to stop them going in at the other end.”
Middlesbrough are currently sixth in the Championship table after 21 games played.
They are level on points with seventh place Watford but lead due to a superior goal difference.
However, the Hornets hold a game in hand, as do fifth place Blackburn Rovers, who are three points clear of Carrick’s side.
Next up for the Teesside outfit is a trip to face Carrick’s former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney, and his Plymouth Argyle side at Home Park on 21 December in a 3pm kick-off.
Middlesbrough will have their own plans for how to strengthen, and they should be focusing on improving their defensive record.
However, the speculation surrounding Emmanuel Latte Lath could also throw a spanner in the works, as his departure would force the need to find some added firepower in attack.
If Boro can add one or two to the team without losing anyone important then they should be in a good position to fight for a top six finish.
