Arne Slot has outlined what he wants from Liverpool’s centre-forward as the club continue to be linked with signing a striker this summer.
Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez have combined for just nine goals in the Premier League this season. The latter was linked with an exit during the January transfer window, while Jota’s time with Liverpool has been plagued by fitness issues.
Liverpool have been reliant on Mohamed Salah for goals, while Luis Diaz has been used as a makeshift centre-forward during periods of the campaign. That duo are the only Liverpool players to reach 10+ league goals this season.
The Reds have repeatedly been linked with signing a striker this summer. Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, Brighton’s Joao Pedro and RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko are all reportedly players of interest.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Leicester City on Sunday, Slot discussed what he wants – and demands – from his forwards.
“The simple answer is goals. He needs to produce goals. Apart from that, in modern-day football, they need to work hard and be part of an intense pressing team.
“If you look at the teams that are now playing in the semi-finals of the Champions League, all 11 players work their backsides off. So that is also what I’m expecting from our number nine – that he is part of an intense, pressing team.
“In the end though, it’s helpful that a number nine at Liverpool scores goals.”
