Rangers fans are clearly unhappy with losing yet another Old Firm – few are apportioning any blame on Turkey’s Ridvan Yilmaz for having the bravery to take a spot kick despite it being well outside his comfort zone; instead the blame is being heavily placed on Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers for refusing one.
For those unaware, while a team will practise penalties, there is generally no agreed group of five players who will take them in the event of a shoot out.
It is always left, on the day, to those willing to step up and take one; and former Feyenoord man Dessers did not volunteer.
This has led many to sympathise with Ridvan for missing his, and condemn the Nigerian for shirking out of taking the one Ridvan took.
The irony is this – Dessers is a very good penalty taker, the last 6 penalties he’s taken in recent years for club and country going back to May 2022 he’s dispatched with ease. He’s taken two while at Rangers, one for Nigeria and one in the cup for the Famous. Scored both.
His record is actually better than James Tavernier’s, and yet he chose not to take one on Sunday.
There are reasons:
1: He feels hated by fans, and didn’t want the (inevitable) abuse if he missed one.2: His confidence is currently low for the above reasons.3: He wants to leave, and didn’t even want to come on on Sunday in the first place.
Therefore he left the penalty to Ridvan, who bravely took it even if he’s never taken a penalty before in his life, and of course missed.
No one is really blaming the Turk, but a lot of fans are definitely not thrilled with Dessers for seemingly shirking his responsibility there.
