Manchester United are focusing on Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri as their top transfer target in that position as Nuno Mendes no longer looks like being available.
Sources with a close understanding of the situation have informed CaughtOffside that Man Utd have given up on trying to sign Mendes, who is instead expected to sign a new contract at Paris Saint-Germain.
The Red Devils had been really keen on the Portugal international, but Ait-Nouri is another player who’s impressed as a potentially good fit for Ruben Amorim’s side.
The 23-year-old has impressed in his time in the Premier League and this is not the first time he’s been on the radar of bigger clubs, with the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool also looking at him in recent times.
Still, CaughtOffside understands United are now making Ait-Nouri a priority, with Wolves possibly open to letting the Algeria international go for around €55-60m.

If United can land a talent like Ait-Nouri for that kind of price, it would surely go down as good business by the club, even if they perhaps need to be a bit careful with their money.
Sources have indicated that MUFC could also explore getting that price tag down by including Luke Shaw or Tyrell Malacia as part of the deal, though it remains to be seen if that’s something Wolves would consider.
Ait-Nouri seems like a fairly safe bet, though, even if he doesn’t come cheap, as he’s young enough that he can still keep on improving, whilst also already having Premier League experience.
His abilities defensively and going forward should also make him an ideal wing-back in Amorim’s tactical system, and it’s hard to imagine there are many other players out there who’d be better suited for that role.
Wolves could be in a relegation battle this season, however, so that might mean they refuse offers for key players this January, leaving interested clubs to wait until the summer.
