With constant injuries occurring for Tottenham Hotspur over the course of the 24/25 season, it has left the squad very depleted and short of options in a number of positions for Ange Postecoglou. Pressure has built up on the 59-year-old Greek born Australian, with certain sections of the fanbase calling for his head after losing five of the last ten Premier League matches, and only winning one of those against bottom of the table Southampton just before Christmas. Last night some of that scrutiny would have been eased, as they ran out 2-3 winners in their UEFA Europa League clash against Hoffenheim in Germany's south-west. Goals came from captain Heung-Min Son netting a brace and an opener from James Maddison.
Spurs have a number of players out on loan, and whilst these injuries keep happening, it has led people to ask the question if Postecoglou has thought or will think about bringing some of them players back. one reporter asked if the club were going to recall wingers Manor Solomon and Bryan Gil, who are currently at Leeds United and Girona respectively. Postecoglou swiftly replied with "no, we won't be recalling these players." The former especially has impressed for the side that are currently top of the Championship, scoring five goals and getting as many assists, and scoring the opener in their last two games. Solomon signed for Spus from Ukranian club Shakhtar Donetsk, after a loan spell at another London Premier League club in Fulham, and only played six times for Ange's team.
As for Gil, he has only managed a couple of goals and three assists for a Girona side who haven't quite hit the heights they did last season, sitting 8th in La Liga and failing to get out of the inaugural 'league phase' of this seasons Champions League, winning just the one game out of seven, and falling to defeat again the other night 1-0 at the San Siro where they played Italian giants AC Milan. Gil signed for Spurs in 2021 from Sevilla for around twenty-one and a half million pounds, and has only played forty-three times for the North Londoners, without scoring a solitary goal and managing just the one assist, so you can see why Postecoglou doesn't want to recall these players, as they clearly do not fit with either the style of the system, or they don't meet the physical demands of playing for a very high pressing outfit lie Spurs are.
This has led to fans questioning the ambition of the club within the transfer window, because with the period being over in a week's time, the club have still only signed Czech Republic international goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Some have said if they're not going to spend any money on trying to bring new players in, why don't the club just recall the ones they already own and it would be less risk for important players such as Son and Dejan Kulusevski, who could get some rest when needed.
Some of the other players Spurs have out on loan however do seem to have a future at the club, apart from the Danish midfielder Pierre-Emilie Hojbjerg, who is set to join French club Olympique Marseille on a permanent deal in the summer. The likes of Alfie Devine who is at Belgian side KVC Westerlo and George Abbott at Notts County have both really impressed, with the latter scoring a stunning half volley against Accrington Stanley the other week. The future looks bright for the academy players learning their trade elsewhere!
