QPR’s move for Albion Rovers striker Kyle Doherty is reportedly in jeopardy as he’s been ruled out until mid-January with an injury.

The 20-year-old has scored seven times for the Scottish League Two side this season and, according to the Daily Record, impressed the R’s when he joined them on trial recently.

It is said that Doherty was set to rejoin the west London club for a second trial but that is now in doubt due to injury.

Rovers manager Brian Reid provided an update on the forward after he missed the club’s recent 6-1 defeat to Kelty Hearts on the weekend.

He said: “Kyle Doherty will be out until mid-January at the earliest.

“It seems to be story of the season. I don’t think I’ve had a full squad to pick from.

“Of course it’s a big blow for Kyle and he will be disappointed.

“It will knock his chances a bit at the moment. He’s worked really hard to get his match fitness up.

“It’s a blow to him with teams looking at him.”

The Scottish centre-forward began his career in the St. Mirren youth system before leaving to join Albion Rovers in September 2019.

He broke through into the first team properly last season, scoring four times, and has taken his total goals tally to 11 this term.

The Verdict

This looks a frustrating blow for both Doherty and the west London club.

A move to join the R’s in the Championship would likely have greatly appealed to the 20-year-old, not least given the success compatriot Lyndon Dykes has had since making the switch.

We’ve seen over the past few years that young attacking talent has flourished under Mark Warburton and the Rovers striker will likely hope the coach could have a similar impact on him.

It remains to be seen exactly how the injury will impact his second trial and potential R’s move but it does seem to have put it in jeopardy.

That said, with his contract set to expire in the summer you’d and Reid confirming that multiple teams are looking at him, you’d suspect he won’t be staying with the Scottish League Two side beyond the end of the season.
