Sunderland will soon have to make a call on midfielder Ethan Robson’s long-term future at the club.
The clock is now ticking at the Stadium of Light for the 23-year-old, who is currently on a half-season loan at Grimsby Town and will return in the new year.
But when he does, he will have just six months remaining on his contract.
Kevin Ball is currently overseeing the club’s players who are out on loan and he does expect a decision to be reached soon.
“The decision is down to our manager,” Ball said, per the Sunderland Echo.
“From Ethan’s point of view, he went to Dundee and embraced what was a challenging move for him because it’s not exactly on his doorstep.
“Now, he’s gone to Grimsby and there’s been a period where he’s done exceptionally well but a change of tactics may be the reason he’s been coming off.
“At the age Ethan is, he needs to get games under his belt but the decision will be made by senior management in the next month.”
Even if Robson does pen a new contract, Ball offered no assurances that he would be staying put on Wearside.
“It could be that they bring him back and say ‘can you improve our midfield?’,” added Ball.
“It might be that he comes back and goes out on loan again but that’s a decision the manager will have to make.”
