The head of Montpellier HSC is clearly not pleased with the leadership of their veteran attacking midfielder.
L’Équipe reported on Friday that club president Laurent Nicollin decided to strip Téji Savanier (33) of the armband ahead of their upcoming fixture with Olympique Lyonnais.
The club reportedly held a players’ meeting in the dressing room on Friday morning before leaving for Lyon. The decision to take away Savanier’s captaincy was made shortly after the meeting concluded. The decision came after a video if the playmaker during a defeat in the Coupe de France before Christmas went viral. Responding to an opposition fan, he suggested that he didn’t care about La Paillade’s plight due to his high wages.
Montpellier are in grave danger of being relegated this season, sitting dead-last with a mere nine points from 15 domestic games.
Under manager Jean-Louis Gasset, this team have points in two of their previous three league fixtures. They exited the Coupe de France last month, suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to Championnat National 2 side Le Puy Foot 43 Auvergne.
Nicollin didn’t mince words following his side’s humiliating defeat in that tournament, calling for a much better effort from his side this weekend when they battle Lyon on Saturday.
La Paillade have yet to earn a single point away from home this season, failing to score in their last four games as the visitors. There’s no word on whether this move is temporary or permanent or who will captain the squad in the meantime. Jordan Ferri (32) is the club’s vice-captain.
