Rangers have struggled in the Scottish Premiership this season and they are already nine points behind Celtic at the top.

Manager Philippe Clement was backed in the summer transfer window with funds for squad rebuilding, and he is likely to be given more time at Ibrox to turn things around.

The Rangers boss is undoubtedly under pressure, but without a permanent chairman and chief executive officer in place, it is highly unlikely that they will sack him.

Rangers face Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final in December, and the outcome of the match could also determine Clement’s Ibrox future.

His sacking will not solve major problems at the club, but his position will definitely come under scrutiny if the results do not improve after the international break.

Who would Rangers hire if they sack Clement?

Rangers fans would love to see Steven Gerrard given another chance. He won the Scottish Premiership title and did a decent job before he moved to Aston Villa.

However, his record at Villa and Al-Ettifaq was poor, and he would be a risky appointment now.

According to journalist Andrew Newport, Derek McInnes is ‘the obvious choice’ to replace Clement. He is a former Rangers player and knows the club inside out.

McInnes did a brilliant job at Aberdeen, although he may not be someone who could excite the fan base.

Stick with Clement for the time being

After sacking Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Michael Beale in back-to-back seasons, it doesn’t give a strong impression if Rangers pull the trigger on Clement in exactly a similar way.

The managerial appointments at Rangers are going on in cycles, and it is taking the club nowhere.

It makes sense for the Gers to stick with Clement and give him more time to make it work.

Unfortunately, there is little evidence to show that Clement’s side can go on a long unbeaten run and close the gap with Celtic and Aberdeen at the top.
