Tottenham chase Chelsea defensive target as Blues need total rethink | OneFootball

Ben Jacobs is well connected when it comes to Chelsea transfer rumours, and today he’s all over the news that the Blues are very serious about signing Marc Guehi.

In quotes picked up by CaughtOffside, Jacobs pointed out that other teams were interested, and it may well come down to a simple case of the team which makes it into the Champions League winning the race:

“There will be other suitors [for Guehi]. Of course, we shouldn’t discount Newcastle, who made a series of bids last summer – and Tottenham could return, even though Kevin Danso ended up joining.But I think the feeling is that Guehi knows Chelsea, obviously very well. He’s been there before, he’s open to that move, and I’m told he would ideally like to stay in London.

“So Chelsea can see value in the fee for Guehi, which has been deemed to be very inflated in previous windows. But if – because of his contractual situation – that fee drops to in and around £50million, I think that is a deal that Chelsea will return for. And if they can agree a fee with Palace, I think the player is open to returning to Stamford Bridge.”

Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill and Axel Disasi in a montage of Chelsea defence and defenders.

Whether or not they sign Guehi, Chelsea’s whole central defensive unit needs serious looking at. Wesley Fofana has had some dreadful long term injuries, and while we were told they were just bad luck, it may well be that he will now always be fragile given the damage that was done.

Benoit Badiashile unreliable, both on the pitch and in getting fit to play.

Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah both look like they’ll be sold in the summer. Levi Colwill has tons of talent but needs to learn from an elite defender, not figure it out for himself.
