The full-back kept the Liverpool star quiet in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg

Tottenham full-back Djed Spence says he backs himself to come out on top against Liverpool's Mohamed Salah in Thursday's Carabao Cup semi-final decider and has revealed his aim for an England call-up.

Spence helped to keep Salah quiet as Spurs won the first leg 1-0 in north London last month and the 24-year-old, who has been deputising at left-back for Ange Postecoglou's depleted side, is likely to be in direct competition with the Egyptian again at Anfield.

"I back myself against any winger, Salah or whoever. I back myself against anyone," said Spence. "[Salah] is a great player, a top player. He's in good form also. You’ve just got to nullify what he's good at it, really. He's good at a lot of things, I just gotta stay focused on it and hopefully come out on top.

"We're always ready. We’ve got to be confident and we gotta be ready to fight. and hopefully we make it to the final. I take confidence from every game, every game I'm gonna feel more confident and hopefully get better."

Spence, 24, has impressed on his unfavoured left side since breaking into the Spurs team late last year and he was named man of the match in Sunday's 2-0 win at Brentford, where he stood up well to the in-form Bryan Mbuemo.

Spence was speaking at Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium while sporting a pin badge of the Spurs' crest flanking the Jamaican national flag.

The London-born defender, whose father is Jamaican, says he is proud of his heritage but is targeting a senior England call-up after winning six caps for the Under-21s.

"I definitely want to play for England," Spence said. "That's definitely one of my goals. I definitely want to be called up, so it’s a goal that I want to achieve. We’ll have to see. But I’m definitely proud of my [Jamaican] heritage. My family are from St Mary’s."

The win in west London ended a run of four straight league defeats for Spurs and was their first victory in the Premier League since Spence's full debut at Southampton on December 15.

At full-time, Postecoglou's players huddled together in front of their away supporters and Spence says they want to use the result to kick on.

"We’re buzzing," he said. "I’m happy to get the three points and time to look forward.

"Nothing specific [was said in the huddle], just that we gotta keep the fight, we gotta keep the momentum and keep going. That's just what we did and is what we need to do more often.

"It's been difficult but we fight for the manager, we fight for the club and you know, we all believe in what he wants to do. We’re over the moon with the three points and hopefully we can just kick on from here.

"We've got a lot of players to come back, a lot of key players, great players. Once they come back it gives us the strength to kick on in the season."

Asked about being named man of the match for the first time, Spence added: "I'm buzzing, it’s my first, so hopefully first of many.

"I just swore down to keep going and [the team] congratulated me. I'm happy.

"I just believe in my abilities and I'm a confident player, so if I’m playing off the left or right I just try to do my best.

"I think I'm a very calm person off the pitch as well, on the pitch, I'm very calm and I'm composed."
