Malen, who turns 26 on Jan. 19, originally played at the Ajax youth academy before switching to Arsenal in 2015. He was a regular in the Gunners’ youth competitions, but wanted more first-team opportunities. PSV Eindhoven purchased his option in 2017, where he showcased his talent by netting 55 goals and providing 24 assists in 116 appearances. His impressive performance caught the attention of Borussia Dortmund, who engineered his move to the Bundesliga in 2021. During his tenure at Dortmund, Malen scored 39 goals and contributed 20 assists over 132 matches.

Known for his explosive acceleration and instinctive goal-scoring and, Malen can play effectively on either flank or as a central striker. Such adaptability provides manager Unai Emery with numerous options to diversify attacking strategies. He also provides much needed backup for a squad facing the grind of sustained national and international fixtures. With Ross Barkley and John McGinn both injured, and Jhon Durán still playing his super-sub role, Malen will provide depth and a new attacking threat.

Anticipated Debut

Though he made the roster for Saturday’s fixture against Arsenal, Malen did not enter the game. Given that his transfer had only been finalized days before, there couldn’t have been much opportunity to train with his new squad. But fans will be hopeful to see this new face in claret-and-blue when they host West Ham on Jan. 26.
