AC Milan kept a clean sheet against Girona in the Champions League last night, their first under Sergio Conceicao, and they have Mike Maignan to thank.
This morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanPress) writes the following about Maignan: ‘The return of Super Mike. He’s back to being a leader’. He has come under fire for some of the goals conceded in recent weeks, yet a decisive performance is never far away.
Ever since Conceicao’s arrival, Maignan has always worn the captain’s armband, which in the previous months had been worn by various players from Theo Hernandez to Rafael Leao. It is very possible that this has transmitted an extra sense of responsibility to the Frenchman.
It is difficult to be more responsible than he has always been, though. Those who work daily with the ex-Lille man speak of a great example of a model professional, who is always on the ball no matter what the situation.
The three big saves he made yesterday help Milan to get their hands on a big win towards direct qualification to the Champions League round of 16, which has positive repercussions from an economic point of view as well as sporting.
Maignan got a 7 out of 10 in our player ratings: “The captain saved Milan from conceding in the first half with two big saves, one before the goal and one after. It could have been a very different game without those saves so a high rating is certainly justified here.”
