Head-to-head record: The team from Upper Bavaria have the upper hand in the head-to-head record between the two teams after their 5-3 win in the reverse fixture. The Ingolstadt team have now won three of the seven meetings between the two sides. BVB's U23 team have emerged victorious on two occasions, with the other two matches ending in draws.
From the U23s: After last weekend's 0-0 draw in Mannheim and the parallel victory of the second team of VfB Stuttgart against Sandhausen, Borussia slipped to 17th place in the table – and thus into the first relegation place. The Black & Yellows haven't won in their last six games. "Our defence is stable and we keep creating chances. What we lack is the ability to convert those chances and go ahead in games," explains coach Jan Zimmermann. In the game away to Ingolstadt earlier in the season, his team took an early 2-0 lead, but ultimately lost 5-3 in a spectacular game. "The boys are training very well and scoring goals left, right and centre. We just need to do the same in games," said Zimmermann, who draws hope from his team's performance at the end of the first half of the season – the U23s picked up 12 points in the last eight games of the first half-season. After the game against Ingolstadt, Borussia have to play away to SC Verl (9 April) and at home to Cottbus (13 April) within the space of a week. In addition to the long-term injuries, there are still question marks over the availability of Kjell Wätjen, Julian Hettwer, Franz Roggow and Ayman Azhil.
Facts and figures about the opposition: FC Ingolstadt are in the midst of the battle to be promoted to the Bundesliga 2. With 48 points after 30 matchdays, they find themselves three points off a place in the relegation play-off. Going into the reverse fixture at the end of October, FCI had only 13 points and were in 13th place in the table. Ingolstadt's away form is the reason why the club are not currently in a promotion place: they have only won one of their last five away games – a 4-1 win at SC Verl on 15 March. The game at SCV was also the most recent appearance for FCI's top scorer Sebastian Grönning. The Danish striker, who has scored 16 goals in the current season and will be moving to Hertha Berlin in the summer, suffered an ankle injury before the international break and will be out until further notice. ‘They still have a good mix of experienced and young players, which makes them a tough opponent. Nevertheless, I think we are in a position to gain points on Sunday too,’ says Jan Zimmermann.
The Stadion Rote Erde will open its gates at 12:00 CEST. Tickets for seats and standing places can be purchased in the online ticket shop. MagentaSport will broadcast the game live.
