"Unfortunately" - Swansea City, Joel Mvuka transfer miss highlighted | OneFootball

At FLW, we spoke to our Swansea City pundit to get his take on a player the club should have signed during the summer window.

Swansea City have made a mediocre start to the 2024-25 season, with a 3-0 victory over Preston North End being cancelled out by two 1-0 defeats to Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion.

Outside of that, they also secured a 1-1 draw with their bitter rivals Cardiff City, as Callum Robinson bagged a 79th-minute equaliser after Liam Cullen gave the Swans the lead.

These results came after a busy first summer window for Luke Williams, who made a number of new additions to his side.

The majority on the younger side, the Swans, seem to have made a real pledge to follow the modern pattern of signing inexperienced talent and trying to sell them on in the future.

Despite this, there will have been players that they missed out on in the window. These individuals may be targeted again in future windows or the Swans may choose to exclude them based on how they perform.

Right now, the focus will be on the main squad pushing themselves back up that table as another season of just surviving isn't acceptable.

Swansea should have followed through with Joel Mvuka interest

With the transfer window closed, we spoke to our resident Swans pundit, James Fleming, to get his thoughts on a player that his club should have tried to sign in the summer.

One name in particular was on Fleming's mind: "A player we should have signed is Joel Mvuka from FC Lorient. We were linked with him a couple of times throughout the transfer window, and he would have been a great asset to our squad.

"He is a Norwegian international who still has a lot of potential at just 21-years-old."

Speaking about his concerns with the squad, Fleming added: "I think out wide has been an area we have struggled a lot with recently. Whilst we have some talented players like Florian Bianchini and Myles Peart-Harris as well, a player like Mvuka, you don't get many opportunities to sign someone with that sort of potential.

"If we had managed to bring him in it would have been a great signing, but unfortunately, that is one of the ones we missed out on."

While no reports emerged as to how close a deal was for Mvuka, it does feel as if this is one that Swansea have missed out on.

Although his career to date may not be stellar, it has shown glimpses of real talent, with his 11 goal contributions in 26 Eliteserien games for FK Bodø/Glimt in 2022 standing out as a particular highlight.

Now playing for Lorient in Ligue 2, you feel that his level is well in excess of that.

A move to Swansea would have aided his development tenfold, with head coach Luke Williams brilliant at getting the most out of his wide players. This was most evident last season at Notts County, where he played a large hand in Jodi Jones smashing the League Two assist record, with 24 across the campaign.
