As reported by FT Redaktion and Sky Sports DE, Union Berlin are set to replace Leonardo Bonucci with Hoffenheim centre-back, Kevin Vogt.
After just half a season in Köpenick, starved of appearances, former Juventus centre-back Bonucci is departing imminently for Turkish SüperLig side Fenerbahçe.
Bonucci’s arrival had been seen as a signal of intent for Union Berlin.
A historic Champions League qualification triggered the incomings of well-known names, such as Kevin Volland, Robin Gosens, David Fofana and Alex Kral.
Bonucci, at 36, was the jewel in the Köpenick crown. Boasting honours at club and international level, the Italy captain was heralded as a marquee signing but failed to impress and leaves a lack of defensive cover for an Union side battling to avoid relegation.
Sitting 15th, three points above the relegation places, Union Berlin are moving quickly to bolster their defence before their Bundesliga trip to Freiburg on Saturday.
Hoffenheim have reportedly given Union Berlin permission to discuss contract terms with Kevin Vogt and the German defender is keen on a move to the capital.
Vogt has not missed a game (16 appearances) for Hoffenheim so far this season and made nearly 200 across his eight seasons with the club.
Known for his discipline and hard-tackling, Vogt is a centre-back that can step up into a defensive midfielder and offers his future Head Coach, Nenad Bjelica competition for places alongside Diogo Leite and Robin Knocke.
The deal is likely to be permanent and could see the €2 million-rated 32 year old make his first appearance for his new side upon the return of Bundesliga this coming weekend.
