The Reds have just completed their first season back in the Barclays Women’s Super League. Manager Matt Beard has put down some solid foundations for the club’s potential future success.
FAWSL Full-Time spoke with Liverpool forward Van de Sanden in Eindhoven ahead of this afternoon’s UEFA Women’s Champions League final. The player said that she dreams of representing The Reds in European football’s premier competition in the coming years.
“I hope so, that’s my dream to bring Liverpool to the Champions League,” Van de Sanden said.
“We need to take a few more steps. We’ve just come back into the league and we finished seventh at the first attempt which is good because this league is very tough.
“I saw yesterday that the club are going to invest in our training ground; they’re going to buy back Melwood, the old training ground for the men’s and our women’s team are going to train there. That is already a good step in the right direction.
“My dream is to play Champions League with Liverpool for sure.”
Van de Sanden was Liverpool’s marquee signing last summer when she re-joined the club from VfL Wolfsburg for a second spell on Merseyside. The forward has had an injury-hit campaign but she now feels that she is ready to kick on with the club.
She said “I am very happy. I have had injuries but I understand why I’ve had them. I didn’t play much at Wolfsburg, so my body had to get used to coming back to England and training more in the gym.
“In the last couple of months, I’ve felt strong and fresh and the last few games I played were good.
“I am really happy to be back at Liverpool.”
