We really didn’t believe the rumours about a potential Renato Veiga transfer away from Chelsea this window.
But the more we hear about it, the more likely it seems to be. Today there’s been a whole rush of chatter which makes it seem like it really might happen this month.
The well connected Ben Jacobs has been the latest to comment, saying that Wolves have had a bid rejected, and Dortmund are now closing in on a potential loan deal with an option to buy. Veiga is apparently keen on the move.
Sources in Germany like Patrick Berger are going as far as to say there is a “verbal agreement” on personal terms between the Portugal international and Dortmund.
Renato Veiga scores for Chelsea.
We’re not sure Veiga is all that – either now, or in the future. So we’re not too bothered if he leaves. But it is without doubt a slightly odd way to manage your squad. When he signed, he would probably have assumed he was going to be behind Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell in the pecking order.
In fact, he’s been second choice left back and has played every cup game, as well as having the occasional taste of league action. So you’re left scratching your head as to why he would want to leave, having played just as much (or perhaps even more) than he signed up for when he arrived in the summer.
We can see why Chelsea would be happy to cash in and make a quick profit on a player they signed very cheaply just a few months ago – but is it really worth leaving yourself without a backup left back just for the sake of a few million in profit? This is a team which wastes tens of millions in every window.
