Last season’s Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund will take on Barcelona in the quarterfinals, thanks to a narrow win over LOSC Lille.

The Bundesliga giants secured a 2-1 victory over the French club last night, leading to a 3-2 win over aggregate.

Dortmund’s win meant they will take on Barcelona in the quarterfinals, which promises to be a special match for Niko Kovac as he can reunite with his former assistant, Hansi Flick.

Dortmund players on facing Barcelona

While Kovac spoke fondly about the prospect of facing Flick’s Barcelona, Dortmund players sounded cautiously optimistic about facing the Catalans in the next round.

Emre Can, for one, said that Dortmund are ready to battle it out for a place in the semifinals.

“Football is played for these kinds of matches. We want to go there, we want to enjoy the match and put in a strong performance. Our goal is to qualify and we will fight for it. We will see what happens,” Can said (h/t BVB.de) after the Lille game.

Apart from Can, Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel also talked about the prospect of facing Barcelona in the next round.

The Swiss goalkeeper admitted that Dortmund will be underdogs for this encounter but admitted he is stoked about the possibility of

“We’re the underdog against Barcelona. They’re a great opponent, and it’ll be a very tough match, but there’s nothing better than playing in the Champions League quarterfinal against Barcelona,” he said.

This won’t be the first time Barcelona will be facing Dortmund in the UCL this season as the two had met during the league phase as well.

The Catalans were able to secure a 3-2 victory on that occasion. However, a lot has changed since, including the Dortmund team now being coached by Niko Kovac.
