West Brom midfielder Tom Rogic has had his FIFA World Cup dreams dashed after not being named in Australia’s 26-man squad for the upcoming tournament.

Manager Graham Arnold has opted to omit the creative midfielder from his plans in Qatar later this month in what could be a sign of the potential end of his career with the Socceroos.

Rogic has been a stalwart for his national side since his debut in November 2012 when still playing for A-League side Central Coast Mariners, making 53 appearances and scoring 10 goals.

The midfielder appeared at the 2018 World Cup in Brazil for Australia, playing in all three group matches but he will now not get the chance to play in a second tournament.

His most recent Socceroos appearance came in February against Vietnam in a World Cup qualifying match, but he failed to appear in their final two group matches, nor was he selected for their play-off clash against the United Arab Emirates.

Rogic has only been a Baggies player since September having been acquired as a free agent by previous manager Steve Bruce, with five outings to his name so far this season.

The Verdict

With Rogic being pretty much a part of the furniture as far as being in the Australia squad goes, so it’s perhaps a surprise to see him not selected for international football’s biggest tournament.

That is despite not being selected for their previous two match squads, which suggests that he has fallen right out of favour with Graham Arnold.

Signing with West Brom and getting match-fit for the World Cup was surely a reason for Rogic deciding when he did to link up with Albion, and his non-inclusion could see him potentially lose motivation.

Will Australia regret not selecting him? Who knows, but he is a player with lots of experience and that could be a big miss.
