Why Chelsea’s 30 G/A target will be so hard to sign this summer

Fabrizio Romano’s quotes from this morning make it very clear that Chelsea have 3 main striker options as they look to strengthen up top.

Benjamin Sesko is a name we’ve heard a lot about in the last few years, and he will be on the market at the right price (like all RB Leipzig players). Liam Delap we know all about, and he has a relegation release clause which will make him very affordable. There should be no problem persuading either of them to leave their current club – Leipzig are about to have a major rebuild, making it a good time for Sesko to move on. Delap won’t want to drop down to the Championship.

But what about the third option, Hugo Ekitike? His name has been around a while, and it was suggested we move for him as far back as 2023. But in terms of this summer, he’s a relatively new addition to the list. A misjudged move to PSG in the summer of 2022 set him back, but he’s now really found his feet.

Ekitike looks like the hardest to sign of Chelsea’s targeted trio

Having only signed for Frankfurt a year ago, and having had such a strong season there, we suspect the Frenchman will be the hardest to sign. To start with, he may be keen to continue his career in the Bundesliga at an attacking team where he’s really thriving. He may be in no rush to make a Premier League move, unlike the others too, especially given his experienced in Paris.

Even if he does want to move, he’s locked up on a contract for a good few years, and Frankfurt’s asking price is likely to be pretty hefty, especially compared to the release clause in Delap’s contract.
