Liverpool youngster Calvin Ramsay failed to deliver while on loan with Wigan Athletic, Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End

Wigan Athletic's summer transfer window was a busy one, as the Latics waved goodbye to senior players such as Charlie Wyke and Josh Magennis, who left the club following the expiration of their contracts, while former star defender and youth academy graduate Charlie Hughes was sold to Hull City.

Latics boss Shaun Maloney also recruited plenty of fresh talent last summer, such as winger Silko Thomas on loan from Leicester City, and full-backs Luke Chambers and Calvin Ramsay, both on loan from Liverpool.

When Maloney and co secured the additions of Chambers and Ramsay, the Brick Community Stadium faithful had every reason to feel excited, as the former had already enjoyed a successful loan stint in Greater Manchester last campaign.

In fact, during 18 League One appearances last term, Chambers even established his attacking threat, as he scored one goal and created three assists.

Following the success of the left-back's loan spell last season, the Latics were hopeful that fellow Reds defender Ramsay could emulate Chambers' exploits.

Wigan, Preston and Bolton will share mutual Ramsay disappointment

Prior to his arrival at the Brick Community Stadium, the young right-back had previously endured underwhelming stints with two of the Latics' rivals, Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers.

However, amid injury issues, Ramsay made just two appearances for North End, before being recalled by his parent club, and offloaded once more to Bolton last January.

Bolton had hoped that the then 20-year-old could have a similar impact at the Toughsheet Community Stadium to that of fellow Liverpool right-back Conor Bradley, who had excelled for Ian Evatt's men during a 2022/23 loan stint, before going on to become one of the Reds' finest young talents, and even a potential heir to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

But the eventual Wigan man was not much of an asset for Wanderers, and made just four League One outings, while Evatt's side would go on to lose the play-off final at the hands of Oxford United.

Despite his tricky spells at both North End and Wanderers though, the Latics were hopeful that Ramsay could deliver during his time at the Brick Community Stadium, and follow Chambers' blueprint.

Previously in his career, the right-back has made a senior appearance for Scotland, as well as two outings for Liverpool in both the EFL Cup and the Champions League.

Meanwhile, before making his big move to Merseyside in the summer of 2022, Ramsay managed to score one goal and created four assists in 24 Scottish Premiership outings for his former club Aberdeen during a 2021/22 campaign in which he also made six UEFA Conference League outings.

With such an impressive CV to his name, the Latics had hoped that Ramsay's time at the Brick Community Stadium would be a success story.

However, the Scotland international failed to assert himself as a regular in Maloney's side, and made just 12 appearances across all competitions, which included just three League One starts.

During the current transfer window, the former Aberdeen man was recalled by parent club Liverpool, and subsequently loaned out to the Dons' Scottish Premiership rivals, Kilmarnock.

The Latics have therefore been left with a feeling similar to that of Bolton and Preston, as Ramsay could have offered so much quality, but delivered very little.

Latics will hope that Josh Robinson can deliver what Ramsay couldn't

Ramsay's last ever Latics outing came during a 3-2 defeat at the hands of League Two side Chesterfield in the EFL Trophy knockout stages last month, which sadly epitomised the youngster's poor stint with Maloney's men.

Perhaps the writing was on the wall that the Scot's time with the Greater Manchester club was up when they signed fellow young right-back Josh Robinson on a permanent transfer from Arsenal on New Year's Day.

Latics supporters will hope that Robinson's time with their club can be more successful than that of Ramsay's, but for now, the Brick Community Stadium faithful can share a similar disappointment to that of Preston and Bolton fans when it comes to the Liverpool man.
