A question for my fellow Newcastle United fans.
What would you see as positive form in the weeks and months ahead?
What would you see as a good return, how many wins?
How about say, if Newcastle United won 13 of their next 18 matches.
Would you see that as a brilliant return, a rubbish return, somewhere in between?
To get an idea of what 13 wins in 18 matches equates to, if say it was 13 wins in 18 Premier League games, that would be 39 points at an average of over 2.16 points per match. Over a full season that average points per match would equal 82 points over 38 matches. Last (2023/24) season, 82 points would have got you third place in the Premier League, fourth place had 68 points.
No doubt some of you might have guessed why I am asking this 13 wins in the next 18 matches…
Newcastle United in their last 18 games (in all competitions) have had the following wins and losses.
WINS
Leicester, Brentford, Ipswich, Villa, Man U, Spurs, Arsenal (x2), Bromley, Wolves, Southampton, Birmingham, Forest,
LOSSES
Bournemouth, Fulham, Man City, Liverpool, Brighton
So the last 18 Newcastle United matches producing… thirteen wins and five defeats.
“Ah yes” you say, but those five defeats in the last eighteen have all came in the last nine games.
Well, yes, but these things do happen.
You have runs of matches where you are playing well, then runs where you play not so well. For all kinds of reasons.
Similarly, you have runs of matches where luck, fine margins, referee/VAR decisions go your way, then it can go the other way.
When Newcastle United won those nine matches in a row, fair to say that at times things went for us.
At the same time, in these five defeats, especially the ones against Fulham and Brighton, things didn’t fall our way.
In this run of nine games that saw five defeats, also worth pointing out that as per the current Premier League table below, seven of those last nine matches were against clubs currently top nine in the table, including all of the top four. Worth pointing out that in the remaining 11 Premier League matches, Newcastle play only three PL games against teams in the current top nine.
So the question is, once again, would you take 13 wins in the next 18 Newcastle United matches?
