In an interview with L’Équipe, Reims captain Yunis Abdelhamid (36) has announced that he will leave the club at the end of the 2023/24 season. The Moroccan defender’s contract at the Stade Auguste Delaune is set to expire at the end of the season.

With his contract expiring in June 2024, the 36-year-old was quizzed about his future to which he responded, “My story with Reims will end. (He repeats.) My future with Reims will end at the end of the season… The club told me that I would not be extended. We spent seven great seasons together. Our paths will separate.”

As confirmed by Abdelhamid himself, the decision to not renew his contract was made by Reims, not the player – as the Ligue 1 club informed the Moroccan international defender that his contract would not be renewed. The Reims captain has played his football in the Champagne region for 7 seasons after signing for the club in 2017 from Dijon.

Not ready for retirement

Despite his contract with Reims not being renewed, it does not appear that the centre back is considering retirement. When asked about the potential longevity of his career, Abdelhamid said, “As long as I enjoy training and playing, I don’t put any limits on myself. I still have the fire in me, and the chance to be at a club where the last few years have gone well.”
