Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 44 games

Imagen del artículo:Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 44 games

Albion’s fifth defeat in six matches made it the lowest points haul from six matches since the last half dozen games of Steve Bruce’s reign which came to an end in October 2022. On that occasion, it was a run of three draws and three defeats which gave Bruce’s team a total of one win in their first thirteen games of the campaign. The last time that the Baggies earned fewer points from six games was earlier that year when Bruce had taken over from Valérien Ismaël. The last two games of the Frenchman’s tenure and the first five of Bruce’s earned just one point.

This season’s team are now a point worse off overall than the 2021/22 side at the same stage making this the worst performing Albion side since 1999/2000 although, it should be said, that this season’s tally of 60 points is better than that achieved from 44 games by any of the the Baggies’ second tier teams in the 90s.

Albion won their final two games of the 2021/22 campaign – if they do not do so this season, it will be their worst points tally in a second tier season since 1999/2000. That season, they won their last away game of the season (at Reading) with their previous away win having been the only victory in the previous eleven road trips, at Hull City. In the current campaign, the Baggies’ win at Hull is their only victory in nineteen away league games!

The current run of fourteen away league games without a win is Albion’s longest in the second tier since the 1994/95 season when, having won at Portsmouth on the final day of the previous season, they did not manage another away win until mid-January when they won 2-0 at Elm Park, Reading, in their 15th league game on the road. There has never been a longer winless away run by a second tier Albion side so if the Baggies do not win at Cardiff, it will set a new unwanted club record. In the top tier, a run of 15 away league games without a win was ended when Darren Moore’s team pulled off a surprise win at Old Trafford in April 2018.

The club record for winless away league games in any division stands at 27 matches between December 1969 and April 1971, a run that was ended by a rather famous “offside” goal at Elland Road that was deemed to have cost Leeds United the league title.
