The Aston Villa vs Newcastle preview – Newcastle United will visit Aston Villa in a high-stakes Premier League clash. Both teams are fighting for European places. Villa are unbeaten at home in 2025, but the Magpies are in ruthless form.
Aston Villa suffered a crushing Champions League exit in midweek. They beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 on the night, but the French champions advanced 5-4 on aggregate. Unai Emery was furious after full-time. Villa gave everything. It was still not enough.
Now, they must shift focus. A fifth straight league win is the target. Villa are seventh in the Premier League, only behind Chelsea on goal difference. A top-four finish is still possible. But fatigue could be a factor on Saturday.
Newcastle United arrive in top form. The Magpies destroyed Crystal Palace 5-0 in midweek. That was their sixth straight win in all competitions. Jason Tindall’s side are third in the table and just four points behind Arsenal.
Newcastle have also dominated this fixture recently. They have beaten Aston Villa in each of their last three Premier League meetings, scoring at least three goals in each match.
Unai Emery has no injury concerns ahead of the game. Ollie Watkins was benched in midweek. He is expected to return to the starting lineup. Marcus Rashford should also keep his place.
Leon Bailey came off the bench against PSG and could start. Marco Asensio and Jacob Ramsey are also pushing for starts. However, Asensio missed two penalties recently and may not be trusted from the start.
Newcastle United are still without Sven Botman (knee), Jamaal Lascelles (knee), and Lewis Hall (foot). No new injuries were reported after the win over Crystal Palace.
Anthony Gordon is fit but is expected to be on the bench again. Harvey Barnes is in form and will likely keep his spot. Jacob Murphy will also start. He has 13 goal involvements in his last 17 Premier League away games.
Newcastle have a full week before their next match. So, Tindall could stick with the same starting eleven.
Nick Pope; Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, Tino Livramento; Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton; Jacob Murphy, Alexander Isak, Harvey Barnes
The Swedish striker is in brilliant form. He got on the scoresheet again against Palace and will lead the line.
Barnes is now ahead of Gordon in the pecking order. He adds directness and goal threat.
He has been superb away from home. Four goals and nine assists in his last 17 Premier League away appearances.
The striker should return to the starting lineup after being rested. He is Villa’s top scorer this season.
The captain was brilliant against PSG. His energy and leadership in midfield will be crucial again.
He could return to the first eleven. His pace and dribbling ability could hurt Newcastle’s backline.
Aston Villa have not lost at home in 2025. But Newcastle are playing with full confidence. Villa will be tired after their European game. That could help the Magpies. Expect goals at both ends. But Newcastle might edge it.
