Borussia Dortmund’s €35m option to buy Carney Chukwuemeka after his loan is only active before the Club World Cup according to reports.
Chukwuemeka only started one game under Enzo Maresca during the first half of the season and that was in the Conference League against Astana.
It became clear very quickly the 21-year-old would need to find another club in January and he ended up joining Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the season.
Chukwuemeka has had a few injury issues in Germany, but he’s impressed for the Bundesliga outfit and scored his first goal earlier this month against Freiburg.
It’s been reported the €35m buy option is too expensive for Dortmund, who could look to explore a second loan spell.
Chukwuemeka has impressed Nico Kovac, with the Dortmund boss saying the midfielder’s future is something which will be discussed at the end of the season.

However, German publication Bild via Sport Witness have reported the deal is much more complicated than the media first thought because the buy option is only active before the Club World Cup.
The report adds whilst it’s not a major problem for Dortmund, they were hoping to spend some of the money earned from the Club World Cup to help fund their transfer business.
This can’t have come as a surprise to Dortmund given they signed the contract and would have been fully aware of the clauses involved.

Chelsea will be hoping Chukwuemeka has a strong finish to the season to increase Dorrtmund’s chance of activating the clause or bringing more suitors to the table.
The Blues and Dortmund could be doing a lot of business this summer, with Chelsea said to be leading the race for Jamie Gittens, and it’s been reported they could use Chukwuemeka in a possible swap deal for the young winger.
