Carlo Ancelotti made several changes to his starting lineup as Real Madrid took on Getafe in their last league match. In addition to the fatigue accumulated over the last few months, these rotations were also aimed at ensuring most of his starters arrived sharp and fresh for the upcoming Copa del Rey final against Barcelona on Saturday.
One change that the Italian was forced to make for this match was to keep out Kylian Mbappe, as the Frenchman was nursing a sprain and was not named in the squad.
In the last match against Athletic Club, Ancelotti had played the duo of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes up front in the French star’s absence. However, last night, Rodrygo was also rested, and the Merengues went into this game with a frontline of Vinicius, Brahim Diaz, and Endrick.
Thus, the Brazilian starlet got a good chance to impress his coach with this rare chance to start a league game. However, the match did not go exactly in his favor.
The youngster was unable to get on the scoresheet despite getting some very good opportunities to do so. He got one shot on target after a good Real Madrid attack, but his shot was cleared off the line by a defender after getting past the goalkeeper.
Then he got another chance to get on the scoresheet, but his attempted lob was too easy for the goalkeeper to catch, even though one can argue that a goal from this shot would have been ruled out for offside anyway.
According to Sofascore statistics, he got only 2 shots in this match, 1 on target and another off target. Thus, he missed 2 big chances that he got on the night.
Endrick was also not very involved with the ball, as he got only 13 touches in the 64 minutes he remained on the pitch. In these 64 minutes, he attempted only 7 passes, but all of these passes accurately found their target.
Furthermore, he did not win any of the 3 ground duels that he was engaged in on the night, but won the only 1 aerial duel he participated in.
Thus, this was not a performance that Endrick needed as he got a rare opportunity to showcase his qualities on the pitch. As MARCA has reported, Ancelotti also talked about his performance, and criticised his decision to lob the goalkeeper when he could have taken an easier route to extend his side’s lead on the night.
In this regard, the Italian tactician said:
“He can’t do those things—he’s young and needs to learn, but that kind of thing doesn’t exist in football. He has to shoot as hard as he can. This isn’t a theater club.”
Hopefully, the Brazilian would have learned his lesson and would be more careful when he next steps on the pitch.
