Joe Jacobson has given his take on Alan Sheehan taking over the Swansea City job full time.
Joe Jacobson has urged Swansea City to appoint Alan Sheehan, admitting that it is a 'no-brainer' amid the Swans' amazing end to the season.
When Luke Williams was dismissed in mid-February, there were real concerns about the direction Swansea City might take - and whether a late-season relegation scrap was on the cards.
However, interim boss Alan Sheehan has worked wonders in South Wales, guiding the side to seven wins from his 11 matches at the helm. They've now won five on the bounce, conceding just once in that impressive run.
In fact, over those 11 games, only the promoted pair of Leeds United and Burnley have collected more points - adding weight to the argument that Sheehan deserves the job on a permanent basis.
In terms of his future, the interim boss has admitted that it has to be a "mutual decision" between him and the club. Further adding that they will have to identify whether he and those at the top are "aligned".
Given his impressive record, it’s hard to imagine the club not affording him an opportunity, and the pressure on the board will only grow if he adds two more wins before the season’s out.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World about the potential of Swansea offering Sheehan the full-time job, ex-Wycombe Wanderers defender turned EFL pundit, Joe Jacobson, admitted that the 38-year-old has done all he can.
"What more can Alan Sheehan do?" Jacobson told FLW.
"That’s five wins in a row now, and for Swansea, it’s the first time they’ve done that in about 15 years in the league - which shows what an incredible job he’s done.
"At the time, Swansea were drifting towards a relegation battle. Since Alan Sheehan’s come in, he’s turned their fortunes around, and sometimes it’s simple - not necessarily about the tactics and what goes on the pitch, which Luke Williams was a master at, but more about just managing the players.
"I know Alan Sheehan. I played with him earlier in my career, and he’s that motivator. He can be loud in the dressing room; when he speaks, you listen.
"For me, it’s a no-brainer giving him the opportunity. Hopefully, he can do a good job there."
Clubs are often criticised for appointing an interim manager on a permanent basis, with accusations that they’re simply taking the 'cheap option' or choosing the 'easy way out'.
For Swansea, that would be far from the case. By the 3rd of May, he will have overseen 13 games and has been part of the framework in South Wales since June 2023, when he joined former head coach Michael Duff.
His earlier comments also suggest a coach who isn’t simply rushing into the opportunity, but wants to ensure everything is in place before committing to a permanent contract.
Recent outside appointments of Luke Williams and Michael Duff have gone wrong, so why not employ in-house and offer Sheehan an opportunity to lead this Swansea team forward.
