Harry Maguire says Man Utd’s chaotic win over Lyon in the Europa League quarter finals summed up his rollercoaster spell at the club.

Maguire scored a late winner in extra-time after United had blown a two-goal lead to find themselves 4-2 down on the night, despite Lyon having had a man sent off when the scores were level.

But Ruben Amorim’s side turned it around in incredible fashion through a Bruno Fernandes penalty, Kobbie Mainoo’s close-range finish and Maguire’s header to win 5-4 on the night and 7-6 on aggregate.

“I’ve had some amazing moments at this club,” Maguire said. “I’ve been here six years now, I’ve had some great times and some bad times as well.

“I think that game pretty much summed up my time at this club, to be honest.

“It’s an incredible feeling to score that winner in such an important game. A game that was full of emotion and it was just a mad game. The strangest, maddest game I’ve ever played in or witnessed to be honest.

“I think the lads showed great spirit and fight in the end to dig in and to turn it around.”

Despite the dramatic comeback sending United through to the semi-finals of the competition, Maguire could not help but contemplate would could have been an embarrassing collapse from his side.

“I don’t know how I would have felt if I’d been speaking to you after a defeat,” he said.

“It’s not even worth trying to think about to be honest.

“We played well. In the second half, it was comfortable. I’m sure they had a lot of possession but we were comfortable, they didn’t create chances.

“They scored the first goal out of nothing really, a pinball in our box and they manage to put it in.

“With the season that we’ve had at Old Trafford especially I think we maybe started playing a little bit anxious and a little bit nervous.

“I think it’s understandable but we needed to see out those minutes and we needed to be solid. To end up 2-2 straight away, it was difficult to take. And then obviously in extra time, we can’t get done on two counter attacks like that when we’re playing against ten men. It’s criminal really.

“We’ve shown great spirit in that moment because I’m not sure how everyone else felt but I’m sure they were really disappointed and like we’d let everyone down.”

Not for the first time this season, Maguire was used as a makeshift striker due to his aerial presence in the area as United desperately sought a way back into the game.

The 32-year-old says he is happy to be used in that role but also highlighted how a shortage of attackers in the United squad is making things more difficult.

“You guys can see that we’re probably short on attackers,” he said.

“I mean the squad tonight, we’ve got two attackers in the squad in Garnacho and Rasmus.

“They’ve given everything out there. Garns (Garnacho) was on his last legs, he was up and down the pitch numerous times.

“We are short on attackers. I’m willing to play up there and go up there. I do see myself as a threat and I do feel like I can score a goal up there.”
