Huddersfield Town are casting their eyes over Sheffield Wednesday youngster Joey Phuthi, who is set to depart Hillsborough when his contract expires this summer.

The Terriers' season is well and truly over, having lost six out of their last seven matches in League One to fall out and away from the play-off picture.

Therefore, attentions can turn to not only appointing a new manager, with it being assumed that interim boss Jonathan Worthington won't be landing the role on a full-time basis, but also signing new players - not only for the first-team, but the B Team too.

As reported by the Sheffield Star, one player who Huddersfield are looking at is versatile Sheffield Wednesday youngster Joey Phuthi.

The 20-year-old's name cropped up on Town's B Team bench on Wednesday evening, as they faced Mansfield Town's under-21's in the final of the Central League Cup.

According to reports, Phuthi came off the bench at half-time, and despite being on the losing end of the result, is said to have impressed in the 2-1 defeat.

Despite being under contract to Sheffield Wednesday, Phuthi was eligible to play for Huddersfield as a trialist as he is set to leave Hillsborough this summer when his contract expires, with the decision already been made for him to seek a new challenge.

Having come through the Owls academy, the Zimbabwe international - who can play all down the right-hand side of the pitch as a wing-back or a winger - only featured twice for Wednesday, both appearances coming under Danny Rohl's management in the 2023-24 season.

Phuthi will now look to earn a contract at the John Smith's Stadium or perhaps make sure eyes from elsewhere are locked on to him as he gets set to become a free agent, although it has been reported that Huddersfield have been long-term admirers of his abilities.

Joey Phuthi could be a sensible Huddersfield Town addition for the future

Given the disappointment of the second half of the season, Huddersfield are likely going to have to rebuild under a new manager this summer.

There was plenty of League One experience within their squad, but it still fell short of the play-offs, so perhaps there is a need for more youthful exuberance come 2025-26.

Phuthi is a player who could potentially step into League One and make an impact, but if he were to sign for Huddersfield, you get the feeling that he'd be more of a B Team player to begin with, rather than being thrown straight into the mix of the first-team.
