Inter Milan will face Roma in Serie A on Sunday rather than Saturday.

The fixture has been postponed to 15.00 CET on Sunday, having initially been scheduled for the Saturday.

This is in order to respect the day of mourning with the funeral of Pope Francis.

But that comes after a day of significant uncertainty.

Yesterday saw hectic behind-the-scenes talks regarding the possibility of keeping the fixture on Saturday.

The reason for this would be the timing of Inter’s Champions League semifinal first leg against Barcelona.

Inter travel to Spain to take on the Blaugranas on Wednesday. Therefore, the timing of a Sunday league outing would hardly be ideal in terms of rest and preparation for that match.

There had reportedly been a willingness on the part of the Lega Serie A and the Italian government to allow Inter Milan’s match against Roma to go ahead on Saturday.

That would have been to allow Inter the time for recovery ahead of their showdown with Barcelona.

Naturally, there is the hope that an Italian team can reach the final of the Champions League.

Therefore, the authorities were willing to grant Inter an exemption so they would not have a notable disadvantage in their tie against Barcelona.

However, that would undoubtedly also have carried with it some controversial associations.

Inter Milan could well have faced allegations and innuendos of “favouritism” on the part of the authorities.

But that is a moot point. Inter have decided to accept the rescheduling of their clash with Roma to Sunday.
