With eight games to go in Ligue 1, Marseille defender and Canada international Derek Cornelius has almost completed his first season in French football. Speaking to Get French Football News at a press conference ahead of Marseille’s trip to Reims on Saturday, the defender gave his thoughts on adapting to life at Olympique de Marseille.

“It’s definitely been an interesting season. The league has been very competitive, there aren’t any easy games and you have to work hard to get three points. It’s exciting and fun (the culture). Every day I come into work there’s a new challenge in training, and always another challenge on the weekend. I’ve really enjoyed my first year here and I hope that stays the same for years to come.”The 27-year-old joined Olympique de Marseille this summer from Swedish side Mälmo and has since made 19 appearances for Roberto De Zerbi’s side. “There are a lot of trips, a lot of games, but that’s my life. You have to recover quickly. We have really good staff and good coaches, both here and with Canada, to manage these trips well. Recovery is essential, and now I have to be ready for tomorrow’s game. I feel good and I can’t wait.”“You always have to be ready to play. It’s an honour to wear this shirt, so I don’t think we feel any more pressure than usual. As for the matches, it’s true that we have to face Monaco and Lille, but first there’s Reims. That’s the most important match for the moment. We’ll take them one at a time. We have eight finals to play.”GFFN | George Boxall – Reporting from La Commanderie, Marseille.
