There were a couple of odd sites at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard on Saturday. For the first time since January, we witnessed Paris Saint-Germain behind in a Ligue 1 game, although Luis Enrique’s side did ultimately run away 6-1 winners after a second-half onslaught.
Even pre-match, there was an unfamiliar scene. Since Luis Enrique’s arrival at PSG, it is a pre-match ritual that he is joined by the sporting director on the pitch. The pair often exchange for several minutes ahead of every Ligue 1 encounter. However, Campos was nowhere to be seen, and the Portuguese sporting director did not even make the trip to Saint-Étienne.
L’Équipe understands that his absence on Saturday was linked to his uncertain future. His deal at PSG expires at the end of the season and while discussions over an extension are ongoing, there is no progress. His absence, therefore, can be interpreted as a means of applying pressure.
Campos, as per L’Équipe, is demanding a wage increase. “There are things that we can’t reveal that are making the discussions take time. It isn’t all about sporting matters,” an internal source at PSG told L’Équipe.
