Mike Maignan has been fantastic in the last two games and for AC Milan, it’s a clear message regarding the contract renewal after they decided to put the negotiations on hold.
Today’s Italian newspapers named Maignan the MOTM for Milan in yesterday’s 2-2 draw against Fiorentina, making a couple of great saves. It comes after another strong performance from the goalkeeper, more specifically in the derby against Inter, suggesting he has regained top form.
For Milan, this is a clear message with regards to the contract renewal, having put negotiations on hold due to the poor performances earlier in the season. Indeed, if Maignan continues to do well in the finale, then it’s an easy decision to make.
After a season with ups and downs, mostly the latter, Maignan has finally found his stride again and it’s really a difference-maker for Milan. In the first leg against Inter, the goalkeeper prevented the Nerazzurri from making it 2-1 and yesterday, he made some very good stops late on as well.
The fact that the Frenchman hasn’t just returned to a solid standard, but also to making some very complicated saves, is a very good sign for the future. International duty with France also acted as a confidence boost in that sense, making three penalty saves across two games.
Milan are still conceding too many goals, that much is true, but you could argue that it makes Maignan’s revival even more impressive. It would be easy, as a goalkeeper, to get knocked down completely by a leaky defence but instead, he has found strength in adversity.
And so, with the requested answers provided by Maignan, now is the time for Milan to proceed with the contract renewal. It has previously been reported that the new salary could be around €5m per year, and given the most recent performances, it’s hard to argue against that.
As he made clear last night, Maignan also has a willingness to remain at the club and it would be strange for the Rossoneri not to reward his performances. Especially since the negotiations were put on hold specifically due to doubts about his consistency.
“I feel good at Milan, I give everything for the shirt every time I put it on and every day. Right now I’ll tell you the truth, I don’t want to talk about the contract. I want to talk about football and find the right balance. Milan, the team and everyone deserve more. My personal situation is not the most important thing at the moment,” he stated.
The current deal, as is the case with Theo Hernandez, will expire in 2026 so a decision will have to be made this summer regardless. There is still some time left of the season but it’s looking like a renewal is a no-brainer, as many expected it to be.
