International breaks always come with a risk of players picking up injuries. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened for Celtic this time around. Kasper Schmeichel picked up a shoulder problem while representing Denmark against Portugal. And not only that, as all substitutions had been used up by that point, he continued to play on with it and finished the match.
While that kind of courage deserves praise, it also might have made the injury worse. The extent of it still remains to be seen.
Some rumours had emerged that Schmeichel could be out for a long time. Doubts had even been raised about his availability for the upcoming international break in September.
Naturally, Celtic fans were left worried about the situation. Schmeichel is the number one goalkeeper for the club and was recently handed a contract extension as well. So, his missing any significant length of time would be a problem for the Hoops.
There is some relatively good news on Schmeichel's situation. As reported by The Scottish Sun, fears that the Celtic goalkeeper could be out until September are wide of the mark, but the 38-year-old is expected to be missing for a period.
Of course, that is good news and bad. But at least, it looks like the worst-case scenario has been avoided. Now, it remains to be seen exactly how long he will be out for.
Celtic do have a couple of cover options for the Danish goalkeeper. They have Viljami Sinisalo, who was signed in the summer from Aston Villa and has made only one cup appearance for the club so far. On the other hand, Scott Bain is also still at Parkhead, although many might not even realise it, and he has not played a single minute.
