Manchester United Eye Striker and Goalkeeper in Major Summer Rebuild

Manchester United’s decline into 14th place in the Premier League table has prompted decisive action from new manager Ruben Amorim, who has wasted no time in identifying two critical problem areas: up front and between the sticks.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, United “intend to sign a goalkeeper and striker in what is shaping up to be a drastic summer transfer window at the club.” Amorim, only weeks into his tenure, has already concluded that competition is needed for Andre Onana, whose second season has been littered with errors. Similarly, the team’s attacking output has dwindled alarmingly, with just 38 goals scored in 33 league games – a return that underscores their position outside the top half.

Goalkeeper Under Review as Options Diminish

Andre Onana’s mixed form has left Amorim considering alternatives. Despite the Cameroonian’s desire to stay – with sources noting “he sees his future at United” – his place is far from secure. Backup keeper Altay Bayindir may depart in search of regular minutes, particularly with a World Cup looming, while veteran Tom Heaton is expected to retire in June.

It’s understood that United have been planning for a new No.1 for some time. The club’s meticulous approach is influenced by financial caution under the INEOS-led regime, with the board keen not to repeat costly mistakes of previous windows.

Onana’s transfer fee – £47.2 million over five years – means United would need to recoup at least £28.32 million if they opt to move him on. While he’s not officially on the market, Amorim’s tactical reshuffle could change that quickly.

Shortage of Goals Drives Striker Search

At the other end of the pitch, United’s attack has been blunted, with Rasmus Hojlund enduring a frustrating campaign. Despite early promise, his goal tally – combined with that of fellow frontman Joshua Zirkzee – has left fans and coaches underwhelmed. As the MEN reveals, “a centre forward is an urgent priority.”

Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres, who previously worked with Amorim, and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko are both under consideration. Sesko notably turned United down in 2022, but the club have “maintained contact with his agent.”

Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap is another intriguing option. The 22-year-old, who has netted 12 times this season, is available for £30 million. Given United’s preference for financially disciplined acquisitions, Delap could be a smart fit.

Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, meanwhile, remains a long-term target. The Nigerian striker has enjoyed a prolific loan spell at Galatasaray, scoring 29 goals in 34 games, and with Napoli under pressure to sell this summer, he may finally be attainable.

Financial Discipline Remains Key Under INEOS

Although United are actively pursuing reinforcements, spending will be influenced by their European fate. As the MEN reports, “United’s budget in the summer is still undecided until it is known whether they will have qualified for the Champions League.” Only a Europa League triumph – which requires navigating a semi-final against Athletic Bilbao – would secure re-entry.

This uncertainty underscores United’s shift in approach. The INEOS co-ownership, now in its second window, has steered away from extravagant deals. “United did not break the £60m barrier for a signing in their first summer,” the article notes, and January’s arrivals – Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven – were budget-friendly.

This cautious yet focused strategy suggests United will look to strike a balance: ambitious but not reckless, strategic rather than scattergun.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a fan’s perspective, this is the most clarity we’ve had in years. For too long, Manchester United’s transfer strategy has felt like throwing darts in the dark – big names, bigger fees, and inconsistent results. Now, under Amorim and with INEOS tightening the reins, there’s a sense that the club is finally thinking long-term.

The need for a reliable striker has never been more obvious. Watching us struggle to break down mid-table sides while knowing Osimhen is smashing them in abroad is painful. The prospect of him in a red shirt? Goosebumps.

As for Onana, we all wanted him to succeed, but there’s no hiding from the reality: mistakes have cost us games. If Amorim sees the need for competition, then fair play – it’s about time we stopped being sentimental.

Liam Delap is an exciting shout too. Young, hungry, and already proven in the Championship. That’s the kind of profile we should be investing in more.

This isn’t about panic-buying. It’s about reshaping the team to Amorim’s identity, finally putting some football sense ahead of commercial gain. If we can land a proper striker, bring in a commanding keeper, and hold onto our best young talents – watch us climb.
