Villarreal attacking midfielder Alex Baena is a wanted man this summer, with several European giants pursuing his signature.

According to Eduardo Burgos, Atletico Madrid are keen on signing Baena before the 2025 Club World Cup, but Manchester United and Bayern Munich have also enquired about his services.

The 23-year-old is one of the best creators in Europe, having registered 17 big chances this term in 27 league appearances. He topped the assist chart last season (14) while recording the same number of big chances created.

That vision attracted top European sides looking for someone to play in the hole behind the striker.

Atletico Madrid could use his services. Los Colchoneros need his playmaking to unlock stubborn defences. His creativity is just what Diego Simeone’s side needs to take the next step towards their 12th La Liga title.

Also, Baena can be a long-term replacement for Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United. The United captain turns 31 this year, and the Red Devils should have a successor ready to take the mantle.

Bayern also sniffed the goods, but Baena will likely be an option if they miss out on Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz.

However, if there is a club that should be in the mix for Baena, it’s Manchester City. With Kevin De Bruyne set to leave this summer, Pep Guardiola needs a successor, and the Spain international ticks all the right boxes.

He sees and executes passes others cannot and has a venomous shot in his locker. His intelligence in tight spaces and eye for the final ball would make him a natural fit in the City system.

There is also the Guardiola factor. As a fellow Spaniard, Baena could thrive under Pep, much like David Silva before him.

The City boss has a proven track record of unlocking the full potential of technically gifted midfielders, and Baena could be his next great project.

Atletico Madrid lead the chase, but City have every reason to throw their hat in the ring. Baena can secure the future of their midfield.
