Manchester United’s hunt for an able replacement for struggling goalkeeper Andre Onana has now taken them to the Serie A, more specifically, AS Roma.
Tuttomercatoweb have claimed that the Red Devils are among the clubs circling for Mile Svilar, whose contract is up in 2027, and both Roma and the goalie have yet to agree new terms.
United fans will remember the goalkeeper from his days at Benfica, when Jose Mourinho was manager and Svilar accidentally helped the Red Devils score in both legs of their Champions League group stage game.
The 25-year-old currently earns €1,280,000 per season (via capology), and he wants around €4,000,000 per season to bring him up to speed with other big names in the Roma squad.
This could allow suitors to take advantage of the situation with Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Manchester City also looking at the Serbian ace.
The former Benfica ace has kept 16 clean sheets in all competitions and has been a pivotal role with the Serie A giants only three points behind the Champions League places.
But should both parties fail to agree a new deal, Roma remain open to the possibility of a separation, and are eyeing a hefty price from his sale.
All of which will count as profit as the goalkeeper was signed on a free on the insistence of former manager Mourinho, who has remained an admirer.
“The topic of Mile Svilar’s renewal continues to dominate the spotlight at Roma. The Belgian goalkeeper, who has become a symbol for the fans, is considered a key figure for the club’s future, but negotiations for the extension of his contract (currently expiring in 2027 and worth around 1 million per year) are still far from being concluded.
“The entourage’s request is around 4 million euros per year, bonuses included, a figure in line with the salaries of the big names in the squad. Discussions are ongoing, but at the moment there is no talk of termination clauses: the focus is on duration, salary and technical role.
“The club is willing to reward Svilar’s performance, but the gap between supply and demand remains wide. Signing a five-year contract would be a crucial choice for the 25-year-old, who should have full faith in the Ranieri and Ghisolfi project.
“In the meantime, several top European clubs are interested in him, including Manchester United , Bayern Munich , Chelsea and Manchester City , attracted by his young and reliable profile. Roma, it is reported, while showing openness to the renewal, does not exclude the possibility of a transfer.”
United have other names on their radar as well and any deal for a goalkeeper will depend on Champions League qualification as otherwise Onana’s future seems secure for now.
