Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is reportedly confident of remaining at Old Trafford.
Onana passed a late fitness test over the weekend to face Leicester City in the Premier League. The 28-year-old enjoyed a promising outing, keeping a clean sheet in the 3-0 win over the Foxes.
However, such a spotless performance has been an exception rather than the norm for the Cameroonian in Manchester.
Signed from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 to replace David de Gea, Onana has failed to win over the United faithful.
In a recent podcast appearance, ex-United man Ben Foster suggested that replacing De Gea with Onana was one of the biggest transfer mistakes in Premier League history.
His erratic style of shot-stopping and failure to dominate the six-yard box during set-piece routines has raised question marks over his long-term future at United.
According to The i Paper, United are considering a new goalkeeper “as part of their summer rebuild.”
It remains unclear if they will explore the market for a potential number one or Onana’s understudy.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are eyeing a possible move for Real Madrid ace Andriy Lunin to replace the Cameroon international.
However, The i Paper suggests that Onana is confident he will stay at the club and is not concerned by the speculation he may be replaced.
It is claimed that the ex-Ajax man “feels he has the backing of his manager, with whom he has a good relationship, and remains focused on helping United turn things around.”
Despite Onana’s commitment and belief in his ability to improve United’s fortunes, it would be a wise move for the club’s hierarchy to look for a more composed figure to guard the side’s net.
