Wolves are seeking to complete a first league-double over Manchester United since 1979/80 largely because, since then, they've won only once in 16 attempts at Old Trafford.
After one of the most exhilarating night's Old Trafford has seen for a little while, can Manchester United kick-start some consistency? On Thursday, the Red Devils took on Olympique Lyonnais in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final, the tie perfectly poised after it ended 2-2 in France.
Well, when Man United raced into a 2-0 half time lead, Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot on target, they appeared set to cruise through. Then the chaos commenced. Lyon scored twice in seven minutes, only to then have Corentin Tolisso sent off, before then starting extra time by scoring twice more, leaving les Gones on the brink of the last four. Man United required a miracle and they got one; Bruno Fernandes from the penalty spot kept their campaign on life support, only for Kobbie Mainoo and then Harry Maguire, a matter of seconds apart, to score as, somehow, they snuck through 7-6.
Rúben Amorim's team will now take on Athletic Club in the semis, the first leg of which is coming at San Mamés on 1 May, desperate to be returning to Bilbao 20 days later for the final. Back in the Premier League, Man United were demolished 4-1 at Newcastle last Sunday, so continue to languish in 14th, without a win in three, and the domestic campaign is a write-off.
Given that, can in-form Wolverhampton Wanderers take advantage and claim a rare win at Old Trafford? Not so long ago, Wolves were in serious danger of relegation, but a win here, and an Ipswich defeat simultaneously, would see them mathematically safe. Vítor Pereira's team made it four Premier League wins in a row last Sunday, something Man United last achieved 14 months ago, Wolves having to wait a little longer, most-recently doing so in the top division in 1972.
Following wins over Southampton, West Ham and Ipswich, the Old Gold defeated Tottenham last weekend, with Rayan Aït-Nouri, Jørgen Strand Larsen and then the returning Matheus Cunha all on target at Molineux. So now, will Wolves win again and bring Man United back to reality at Old Trafford?
Rúben Amorim has himself admitted the Europa League is now the priority although, with Lisandro Martínez, Ayden Heaven, Jonny Evans, Amad and now Joshua Zirkzee all sidelined, he has little scope for rotation.
Given that Thursday's tie went to extra time, Luke Shaw, Harry Amass, Mason Mount and Christian Eriksen all came on, so how many will start this time? One of many heroes from Thursday Kobbie Mainoo has come off the bench during the last three matches, surely itching for a start soon. Lastly, in goal, after Altay Bayındır didn't exactly cover himself in glory on Tyneside, André Onana will continue to be donning the gloves.
Manchester United predicted lineup vs Wolverhampton Wanderers: (3-4-3): Onana; Lindelöf, Maguire, Mazraoui; Dalot, Ugarte, Eriksen, Dorgu; Mount, Fernandes, Højlund.
Of Rasmus Højlund's eight goals this season, five gave come in the Europa League, scoring only once in 17 Premier League outings, so can he kick-start his campaign here?
No such rotation headaches for Vítor Pereira, who's had a full week to prepare for this clash. The only dilemna he's facing comes in attack where, despite the fact his four-match ban is now over, Matheus Cunha started the Spurs match on the bench, before coming off it to secure the victory. This time, he is likely to return to the XI, in place of the injured Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.
Wolverhampton Wanderers predicted lineup vs Manchester United: (3-4-2-1): José Sá; Doherty, Agbadou, Toti; Semedo, André, João Gomes, Aït-Nouri; Munetsi, Cunha, Strand Larsen.
Jørgen Strand Larsen has scored 12 times in the Premier League this season, bagging five across his last four outings, so can he net in a fifth successive league appearance?
Despite Thursday's jubilation, or perhaps partially because of it, we're forecasting a shock win for Wolves over a jaded Man United come Sunday: Manchester United 1-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers.
