Matt O'Riley tipped for blockbuster Celtic return

It was just last summer that Matt O'Riley left Celtic in a Scottish-record move to join Brighton & Hove Albion. On paper, it looked like the perfect move for the Danish international. He was joining a club that has an excellent record of developing players in recent years. Just look at Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Dan Burn, Kaoru Mitoma and more, the list goes on.

Unfortunately for O'Riley, things have not gone as smoothly. He suffered an injury soon after arriving at Brighton & Hove Albion and has never really found his feet in the Premier League since then.

It has not even been a year since O'Riley joined Brighton & Hove Albion but he is being linked with a move away already. Clubs in Italy, like AS Roma, are rumoured to be interested.

But could a return to Celtic Park be on the cards for O'Riley? Peter Grant does not seem to be ruling out the possibility. As reported by the Daily Record, he told Go Radio:

"You are looking at Matt O'Riley's situation, for me, can Matt O'Riley go from the hero he was at Celtic to being a bit-part with Brighton?"He got a bad injury in his first game, he got six minutes the other night, I knew Matt as a kid, he wants to play football all the time."He wants to improve, he wants to get better, he wants to get in the Denmark team. He wants to do all of these things."The way he went about his business up here tells you the type of character he is. He never asked away, he never moaned, played every game."So, I am looking at it, if that situation keeps happening, would Matt be interested in a loan (return) situation, if you lose someone like Hatate?"He knows the expectation, I would definitely ask the question, for sure."

O'Riley was absolutely elite during his time with Celtic. The opportunities simply have not come for him to show that since moving to Brighton though. Could he already be considering an exit?

To be very honest, moving back to Celtic, even on loan, feels unlikely. That chapter seems closed for the time being. But do not rule out the possibility of O'Riley heading out from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer.

One would imagine though that the Seagulls will show a bit more patience with O'Riley. He has had his injury problems and it is way too early to judge what he is capable of at the Premier League level. He needs a good run in the team before coming to any conclusions about his quality.
