David Moyes is convinced Jarrad Branthwaite can achieve his dream of playing for England as an Everton player.
The centre-back is reportedly considering his future at Goodison Park after Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel overlooked him for his first squad.
Manchester United were unsuccessful in their bid to sign Branthwaite last summer, while Liverpool, Spurs and Manchester City have reportedly been tracking his progress this season. Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is also reportedly keeping on reuniting with the defender.
While moving to one of those clubs would certainly boost the 22-year-old’s chances with the national team, Moyes has challenged the player to emulate Everton defenders of the past who have earned England call-ups.
“I would say to him: Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Joleon Lescott – that’s three who we brought in and went on to become international players for England, which was a great achievement,” the Scot said ahead of Wednesday’s Merseyside Derby against Liverpool.
“I think Jarrad is in a position where he could easily go on and do that. I see it as a challenge for Jarrad to pick up and say ‘come on, I’m going to show what I can do’.
“This club has developed quite a few England internationals over the years. We’ve got a very good goalkeeper who is playing for England as well.”
