Last summer Savinho arrived at Manchester City from Troyes. The Brazilian international spent last season on loan at Girona. His strong performances in La Liga earned him a move to the world champions. At times this season, Savinho has dazzled, and at others, he has frustrated. But what the young winger has shown is that he has the potential to develop into a key player for Manchester City. But he needs to add composure and quality in the final third to his game.
So far this season Savinho has made 42 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City. He has scored 2 goals and added 12 assists in these appearances. In terms of assists, Savinho has been an attacking weapon for Pep Guardiola’s side. When he plays on the left wing there are the makings of a lethal combination with Erling Haaland. We saw a superb assist from Savinho for Haaland from the left during Manchester City’s 2-nil win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in December. But on other occasions, Savinho’s decision-making in the final third lets him down. That was on display during City’s 2-nil FA Cup semi-final win over Nottingham Forest last Sunday.
That’s where the improvement for Savinho should come. He is only 21 years of age and this has been his first season in England. But what has let him down is his finishing and composure in the final third. Too often, he snatches at chances, or his final ball is just off. Against Nottingham Forest, he tried to do too much rather than the simple thing. But in time, and with another pre-season under his belt this aspect of his game should develop.
Watching Savinho this season it’s easy to see that he has all of the attributes to become a key player for Manchester City. His dribbling, speed and ability to beat a man do stand out in his play. He has also shown a willingness to track back defensively to help his team. So the strengths of his game do align well for an important role in Pep Guardiola’s squad.
If his end product improves he has the potential to be a top winger for Manchester City. He can get into dangerous positions, the Brazilian winger just has to further develop that side of his game. But in terms of a debut season at Manchester City Savinho has shown plenty. At times, he has dazzled, and on other occasions, he has frustrated. But he does have what it takes to make it at the world champions and the potential is there for him to further develop next season.
