Joelinton was absent from the matchday squad on Saturday, the midfielder missing the Ipswich match having played for Newcastle United in the previous eight matches.

Eddie Howe was asked after Saturday’s 3-0 victory why the Brazil international wasn’t involved.

“Joelinton is going to see a specialist. He trained yesterday [Friday] but just felt his knee wasn’t 100 per cent right. That is the knee that he had an injury with earlier in the season. He has done brilliantly to play through the number of games that he has without having been 100 per cent fit, but he got to the point where he felt he needed a slight intervention, so let’s keep out fingers crossed that it isn’t serious.”

Earlier today (Wednesday 30 April 2025), Sky Sports reported from the training ground. They revealed that when the first team squad had trained this morning, Joelinton wasn’t amongst the players getting ready for Sunday’s match at Brighton.

Now we have had a further update from The Mail on the United midfielder.

Their ‘exclusive’ has reported positive and not so positive news on Joelinton.

The newspaper say their information is that after visiting the specialist, the feedback has been that the knee issue isn’t thought to be serious BUT the expert medical advice is to miss the next four matches. In other words, rest up for the rest of the season.

The Mail add that their sources tell them that whilst the medical advice is to not play again this season, Joelinton himself doesn’t want to accept that this is necessarily going to be the case.

I think that from what Eddie Howe said on Saturday, clearly they have been trying to get through to the end of the season and then have Joelinton get this necessary break from playing.

In an ideal scenario, United will be able to get over the Champions League qualifying line without too much stress. However, if it does end up going to the last one or two matches with qualification still in doubt, then you wonder whether Joelinton may end up being risked if he feels he is up to it and not taking too much of a risk of major injury.
